Mayan Sites

Belize is blessed with a rich mayan heritage of palaces and temples left behind as proof of a past great mayan civilization. Mayan sites such as those of Altun Ha and Xunantunich (pictured on your left), are located close to major roads while others, like Lamanai and Caracol, are more difficult of access.

Xunantunich, less than an hours drive from Yamwits, lies across the green crystalline waters of the Mopan River and the village of San Jose Succotz. Climbing the main temple "El Castillo" is as much a part of the adventure as exploring the surrounding regions.
Lamanai, located on the edge of a lagoon, is accesible by road and river and it is this which makes an excursion to Lamanai unforgettable, for its remoteness and its partially uncovered state heighten its splendour and mystique.

Caracol, the largest kown maya ceremonial center in Belize, is currently in a state of excavation and restoration. Both Caracol and Lamanai are also just one of many examples of the beauty not only of the temple-pyramids themselves but of their surroundings.

Guanacaste National Park

This 50 acre tropical forest remnant, located on the north side of the Western Highway at its junction with the Hummingbird Highway in the Cayo District, provides an opportunity for the whole family to experience the beauty of Belize's world-renowned biodiversity just outside the capital city. The park's relatively small size allows the visitor to come face to face with the varied wild life and lush vegetation.

The park is named for the giant guanacaste(tubroos) tree growing near the southwestern edge of the park. In addition to the guanacaste tree, there are numerous other species of trees throughout the park.

Although the mammal population is rather small, over one hundred species of birds have been identified within the park.
